Indian Camp Ranch at Cortez is the first archaeological subdivision ever built in North America. Its developers, Archie and Mary Hanson, had extensive experience in the planning and development of exclusive communities, including Rolling Hills and Hidden Hills in California.

The Hansons traveled to southwest Colorado in the late 1980's to participate in the numerous world—class archaeological tours the area has to offer They were struck by the vast open spaces, the ethereal beauty, and the mystery and history of the area and decided to make Indian Camp Ranch their home. A few years later, a remarkable and unique development was born, and Indian Camp Ranch at Cortez exists today as one of the most prestigious, unique and breathtakingly beautiful communities in the Four Corners region.
